EVERYTHING You Need to Know

First time or just need a refresher?

This LASER HAIR PREP & AFTERCARE GUIDE covers everything you need to feel prepared, comfortable, and glowing - before, during, and after your Laser hair removal session.

What to EXPECT

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a highly effective way to reduce unwanted hair, but because it relies on targeting pigment, your skin needs to be in a specific state to ensure the treatment is both safe and effective.

Pre Appointment PREPARATION

4 to 6 Weeks Before

To ensure the light energy can properly target the hair follicle, you must stop any hair removal methods that pull hair out by the root.

  • Stop Waxing, Plucking, and Epilating: The follicle must be intact for the IPL to "see" it.

  • Avoid Electrolysis: This can interfere with the growth cycles the laser is trying to target.

  • Sun Protection is Critical: Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and even self-tanning creams. IPL works best when there is a high contrast between the color of the hair (dark) and the color of the skin (light).

2 Weeks Before

As your appointment approaches, your skin needs to be calm and free of photosensitizing agents.

  • Avoid Sunlight: Do not tan or expose the treatment area to too much sunlight 2 weeks prior to the procedure.

  • Avoid Chemical Peels: Stop using strong actives like Retin-A, AHAs/BHAs, or salicylic acid on the treatment area.

  • Check Your Meds: Some antibiotics and supplements (like St. John’s Wort) can make your skin light-sensitive. Consult your technician if you’ve started any new medications.

  • No Spray Tans: Residual pigment from "spray tans" can cause the laser to burn the surface of the skin rather than the hair follicle.

  • No to These: waxing, threading, tweezing or use of any chemical depilatories or bleach the area before and while undergoing the treatment sessions.

24 Hours Before

This is the "prep" window where you get the area ready for the actual light pulses.

  • Shave the Area: Use a clean, sharp razor. You want the hair to be "invisible" above the skin so the energy travels down into the follicle rather than burning the hair on the surface.

  • Cleanse Thoroughly: Arrive at your appointment with skin free of lotions, perfumes, deodorants, or makeup. These can act as a barrier or cause an adverse reaction to the light.

  • Exfoliate Gently: A light exfoliation (with a washcloth or gentle scrub) can help remove dead skin cells, ensuring the light reaches the target more easily.

Post Treatment CARE

1 to 2 Weeks After

  • Avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds for 2 weeks post treatment

  • If the skin feels too warm/hot after the treatment, apply cold compresses (not direct ice)

  • If there are any blisters/burns, apply antibiotic ointment or Aloe Vera

  • Don’t apply make-up over blisters and scabs

  • Keep the area moisturized to avoid hyper/hypopigmentation, infection or scaring

  • Avoid over heating the body, such as strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas, hot baths/showers 48 hours after the treatment

  • Wear sunscreen SPF30+ in the treated area. Reapply often.
